About the Certificates
Origin
Committing Sociology certificates are a joint-initiative between program founder Bruce Ravelli (University of Victoria) and the Canadian Sociological Association (CSA). Committing Sociology Certificates are their attempt to create an easy way to recognize and celebrate all those who are making our classes, our campuses and our communities better places to be.
Criteria
To receive a certificate, the nominee must be someone who has “committed sociology”. We view “Committing sociology” as any initiative that applies the sociological perspective to social issues with the intent of creating progressive social change. Examples might be; a student who organized a fundraiser to support the campus food bank; a staff member who through their actions creates a supportive atmosphere for students; an Associate Dean who continually advocated for developing and offering community-engaged courses; a community member who works with, and for, the unhoused.
Eligibility
Any current member of the CSA can nominate someone for a Committing Sociology Certificate. Confirm your CSA membership status. There are no limitations on who can receive a Committing Sociology Certificate.
Process
After a nomination is reviewed and approved by the CSA, the nominee is notified and sent by email a signed Committing Sociology Certificate. Nominator information (name and affiliation) will be included in the notification email. The nominee will be invited to have their profile posted on the Committing Sociology website.
CSA
The CSA facilitates and promotes research, publication, and the teaching of Sociology. The CSA is committed to the values and principles of equity, diversity, inclusion, and decolonization. We recognize and honour the intersectionality of equity-based identities and therefore invite and encourage the nomination of members from marginalized groups, including Indigenous peoples, racialized persons, persons with disabilities, persons who identify as women, and/or LGBTQ2+.
